[nidokidos] Transgenders: Pakistan's Open Secret (LGBT Documentary) - Real Stories

I have successfully run the canteen at NCA for the past 2 years. This is something which is very difficult for a transgender to achieve in this society. I reached this point in my life without my family's support. They never accepted me. When I joined the Trans community, I realized that all transgender face the same issue: their family beats them up for something that is not their fault. My family thought that because of less interaction with boys, I am pretending to be a girl. They never understood that we are like this by birth – even science has proven it! When I was in B.Com, I left my family to become a part of the Trans community but I never begged or got involved in prostitution because of my family's values. I did work; first with garments, later with food. Then I struggled for the rights of my community and created an organization: Wajood.
When I came across the news that NCA café is empty and they are looking for contractors, I thought: why not? I talked to the head of NCA and he warned me that it would be challenging because I would have to deal with youth and they are less accepting. They would tease me and give me a tough time. I told him I would take this challenge. We opened the café. The first three days, no student showed up. They stood in the corridors and stared at us. My other trans friend told me to give up, that students won't accept us. But we didn't give up. On the fourth day, students from 4th semester came and bought a water bottle. It was not only our first sale but also the first step towards success. Best part is, my mother has now accepted me the way I am and it makes me so happy! For the past 2 years, the students of NCA have been nothing but supportive. They asked me what they should call me because one day they see me dressed as a man, the other as a woman. I said I would be happy with whatever you call me. Because whether I am known as uncle, aunty or baji, I now have a place in their hearts, which is what matters the most.

Transgenders: Pakistan's Open Secret (LGBT Documentary) - Real Stories

Flamboyant, colourful and eccentric, many among Pakistan's marginalised transgender community scrape a living through dancing, singing and begging on the streets of the country's economic capital, Karachi. Many others, though, earn money catering for the sexual needs of local men in the city's seedier districts.
