Indian Pangolin captured by WWF-Pakistan
WWF-Pakistan and the Sindh Wildlife Department jointly took into custody an Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) captured by a security guard recently from Khayaban-e-Hafiz, DHA Karachi. This 4 feet and 10 inches large animal was later kept at the house of Karachi citizen Ronaq Lakhani who informed WWF-Pakistan officials about the incidence. The animal had slight injuries on its body and is being quarantined for a few days by the Sindh Wildlife Department before releasing it into Khirthar National Park.
The scaly anteater, pangolin, is hunted for its scales, which are sold for illegal trade and exported from Pakistan at lucrative rates. Poaching, illegal hunting and trafficking of the animal to a few countries including China and Vietnam has drastically reduced its population in Pakistan. WWF-Pakistan is working in close coordination with provincial wildlife departments to tackle illegal wildlife trade in the country.
Indian Pangolin
Pangolins are mammals of the order Pholidota. The one extant family, Manidae, has three genera: Manis, which comprises four species living in Asia, Phataginus.
