Delhi's most awaited elections have come to a definite conclusion placing Aam Admi Party's Kejiriwal on the throne. Certainly the Delhi voter has given him a second chance. Whether he deserves that chance or not is something we need to wait and see. But one must say that this election was the most challenging one AAP has ever faced. In spite of tough competition from BJP, AAP swiveled its way up to the top.
So there must be something that AAP had done differently this time. Here are the ten factors that led to an AAP wave in the capital city.
Own it Up:
Did something wrong and terrible? Own it up and that is what AAP has done. Time and again Kejiriwal admitted that quitting was the biggest mistake and that he would never repeat it. The party on the whole has admitted that they had failed people. Owning up often leads to positive results and it did for AAP with huge margin of votes, which comes as a huge surprise.
Early Bird Gets the Worm:
And AAP got it right. Soon after the dismal performance in the Lok Sabha election 2014, AAP and its chief Kejiriwal had been preparing for this election.
They got ample time to mend their mistakes and sketch out a perfect plan that best suits their preferences. Right from the declaration of candidates to preparing a manifesto AAP was way ahead of BJP and Congress. Even when BJP came to power in the center they did not give up on the winning prospects. The party used all the multiple challenges available at their disposal to show good results.
Tactful Leadership:
There are leaders who are born and there are leaders who are made. And certainly people follow the leaders based on their perception about a leader. In some areas we find leaders holding 'mass' gatherings in star hotels , which is not meant for the masses and that is where they give a wrong perception. Likewise wearing a 10 lakh suit with his name inscribed on it, did not quite help Modi. It is the large number of poor and middle class citizens you are ruling over and 'suits' do not quite appeal to them. Love it or hate it, Kejiriwal's mufflerman image worked wonders. People could relate to this common man than the 'suited' class.
Offer an Alternative:
AAP was seen as a differentiator. Liberal people were not comfortable with BJP's communal image. And BJP committed blunders in this regard just before the elections. The whole scene they created about removing the words 'secular' and 'socialist' remained fresh amongst the people. Also all reports point that almost all the Muslims where overwhelmingly supporting AAP. AAP gave the people an alternative and people rightly grabbed it.
Congress's Loss Mirrored AAP's Gain:
Congress was digging its own grave for the past 15 year and almost entirely lost its ground in Delhi. Congress became a non-entity this election. And the election was only between BJP and AAP. It was obvious that Congress was going to lose and the next immediate option was AAP. Obviously, those who were loyalist Congress for many years will not vote for BJP at any cost, noting that their objectives are completely different from each other.
The Different Pitch:
Since its inception, AAP has had a different pitch from the others. Their focus was on citizenship, governance and accountability. These are the need of the hour. . AAP reached out to all the people, the rich and the poor and the literate and the illiterate.
One important factor that led to AAP's popularity was their policy of 'no-polarization'. There was no classification of Hindu-Muslim voter, it steered clear of usual identity politics, caste based vote banks and the like. AAP stood as a clear break from the political past of Delhi.
A Clean New Identity:
All the 70 candidates were handpicked by Kejiriwal himself. Not a single tainted candidate was allowed to get a ticket from AAP. All of their details were available online for public to learn more about them. The website allowed the citizens to give feedback on these candidates and the party promised that if any false candidate was found, the list would be removed immediately and they were actually removed. They stood out in contrast from the Congress and BJP.
Vision and Direction:
BJP at one point took Delhi for granted. Not releasing a manifesto for a long time implied that BJP did not have a clear plan for Delhi. BJP relied too much on Modi and Amit Shah's organizing abilities. And to be fair to Modi, this election was not about him, it was all about the CM candidate Kejiriwal. AAP promised to deliver a product that was meant for Delhi, while BJP did not have any idea of the product they were working on.
Bad strategy by BJP
Amit Shah's Bedi Ticket was a Flop:
Shunning all the BJP workers to the corner and induction of Kiran Bedi in the pitch was projected as the biggest masterstroke of Amit Shah. But it surely wasn't. BJP lacked the inner conviction. Local BJP leaders were not happy with this decision. Kiran Bedi had to face opposition from within the party.
In a war like situation promotion from within would have been a better option than pitching Bedi who is a new entrant, for a top position. Also hiring for top positions from outside the organization builds up resentment within some factions of the team who think they deserved the job better and were better qualified for the position. Loyalists would know better about the DNA of the party.
Immense Research done by AAP:
Kejiriwal's biggest strength was his impeccable research. He had convincing answers kept ready for every question. His research led to better decision making and he certainly knew what he was speaking at every stage. Kejriwal's biggest trait was he never spoke like a politician; he spoke the language of the masses. Other leaders try to impose their leadership and superiority over the people. Kejiriwal is very easy to approach, all thanks to the 'common man' image again. While the BJP veterans are on high horses and did not see the need to interact with people. Modesty is the best policy even in politics.
