White lions are NOT albinos - They have blue or gold colouration in their eyes, black features on the tip of their noses as well as "eye-lining" and, dark patches behind their ears ("follow-me signs"). By contrast, albino lions, which lack pigmentation, have characteristic pink or red colouration to their features. White colouration in White Lions is similar to blue eyes in humans, which is similarly due to a recessive gene!
The last white lion was seen in the wild in 1994, after which time they were technically extinct in the wild. Some say White Lions cannot survive in the wild due to perceived lack of camouflage, but it has not been scientifically tested. Currently, there is no law nationally or internationally that protects the White Lions from being wiped off the face of the earth....
