Move over Ice Bucket Challenge. There's a newer and desi-er challenge to take up now.
Inspired by the global charity chain to spread awareness about the disease ALS, Hyderabad-based Manju Latha Kalanidhi has come up with an ingenious way to help those in need with the Rice Bucket Challenge.
"Indian version for Indian needs," it says on the official Rice Bucket Challenge.
In this challenge, all one needs to do is to cook or buy a bucket of rice and feed someone who needs it. It's that simple. Just like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, one should use the hashtag - #RiceBucketChallenge and ask their friends to pay it forward.
In lieu of the challenge, people can donate medicines worth Rs. 100 to their nearest government hospital.
It was Manju Latha Kalanidhi's post on Facebook that started off this challenge. "My own local, practical and tangible version/response to #icebucketchallenge... save water feed the hungry!" she wrote and almost instantly received thumbs ups from all those who liked her idea.
This Indian twist has created quite a stir online and participants are already posting their pictures to spread this new message.

The Hyderabad woman behind the rice bucket challenge
It is ice versus rice now. The difference - the ice bucket comes only if one tries to duck the actual donation for charity. For rice - it is donation all the way. But Hyderabad-based Manjulatha Kalanidhi's brainchild - calling for donation of a bucket of rice and posting the picture online - is doing well. And not just among netizens in India. It seems to have found resonance across the world.
