US government First shutdown in 17 years
The US budget crisis has forced the country's government to shut down partially for the first time in 17 years, causing crisis in Washington and creating political paralysis.
Public institutions and monuments such as the world-famous Statue of Liberty in New York are all closed, and even the Twitter account of the US Capitol has temporarily ceased operation.
Nonetheless, important government agencies such as Homeland Security and Border Patrol are still fully operational, and cases will continue to be heard in the federal courts.
Many supporters of US President Barack Obama blamed the 'Tea Party' conservatives in the Republican Party for the deadlock, but the whole of Congress is losing public credibility as the crisis threatens to harm the US's fragile economic recovery.  President Obama has already called on Congress to quickly pass a budget to allow the federal government to resume operation, and to not hold the country to ransom.

US Capitol Visitor's Center

The US Capitol Visitor's Center is seen empty after the federal government's shutdown. It is the first such shutdown since 1996, when the Republican Congress clashed with Bill Clinton over funding for Medicare, education, the environment and public health.

United States Capitol

A government worker protests outside the US Capitol. The shutdown will potentially put up to 1 million workers on unpaid leave, closing national parks and stalling medical research projects.

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty in New York is one of the more iconic monuments to have been affected by the shutdown. More surprising things to have been hit are the National Zoo's popular 'Panda Cam', and NASA's tweets from space.

An empty Metro platform

This Metro platform near Washington's Capitol Hill was left empty and quiet during the usually bustling morning rush hour.

A federal employee affected by the furlough

A lone worker sits at the end of a row of seats outside a Federal Aviation Administration office building in Washington.

Smithsonian Air and Space Museum

Fay Wagstaff of El Paso, Texas, sits disappointed upon finding out the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum is closed.

NASA gift shop

A man peers into the window of the closed NASA gift shop in Washington. The only members of NASA staff on duty are a skeleton team ensuring the function of the International Space Station.

Smithsonian Air and Space Museum café

The empty café at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington is one of many workplaces that have been left deserted.

National Gallery of Art

Student Tyree Brown, centre, along with fellow classmates from the Corcoran College of Art and Design, take part in a makeshift class on the steps of the National Gallery of Art.
The students were supposed to hold a class inside the museum today, but did not get word that the shutdown would affect all national museums.
