Over the past decade, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre has established itself as a centre of excellence providing comprehensive care free of cost to thousands of indigent cancer patients. This pioneering, state-of-the-art hospital located in the heart of the Punjab was founded by Imran Khan, one of Pakistan's most illustrious cricketers. As a charitable institute, it is funded predominantly from the donations of friends and well-wishers from around the country and across the world.

The inspiration to build the Hospital came from the misfortune and suffering of one individual, Shaukat Khanum, the mother of legendary captain of Pakistan's World Cup–winning cricket team, Imran Khan.

His mother's death and the personal experience of dealing with cancer in a loved one convinced him of the need for a state of the art cancer center with access to everyone, including those who could not otherwise afford the expensive care. The result was the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, in Lahore, the first and only cancer hospital of international standards in Pakistan, dedicated to providing first-class treatment of cancer to all its patients, irrespective of their ability to pay.

Since opening in 1994, the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, has come to be recognized as one of the most credible and resilient charities in Pakistan. The institution has spent over Rs. 9 billion (US $ 130 million) in supporting the treatment of thousands of indigent cancer patients and currently, 75% of all cancer patients seen at the Hospital are receiving financial support. This has only been possible due to generous donors and well-wishers who have supported the cause over the years. Let us trace back the footsteps of history in an attempt to cover the times, events and people who have brought this Hospital to where it stands today.

Research at SKMCH & RC is focused on trying to develop a better understanding of cancer in our population
and finding the best way to treat and manage patients in a developing country.

Over coming years our expanding knowledge of cancer will have a major impact on our ability to predict an individual's level of risk of developing cancer; our ability to detect and diagnose cancer early and our ability to select treatments which are most likely to be effective. We aim to create a bridge between the laboratory and clinic through translational studies to improve diagnosis, management and prognosis for our patients.

A WORD FROM IMRAN KHAN

Over the years, my faith in the goodness of mankind has increased greatly. Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre is a living tribute to your kindness and generosity. I am personally thankful to all those men, women, children, old and young who have made a contribution to launch SKMCH & RC and who have continued to support us in alleviating the sufferings of the victims of cancer.

We needed your support then and we need your support ever more now. More than Rs. 3.6 billion are required annually to run the Hospital. Almost 50% of our revenue is collected from selling Hospital services. The rest comes from Zakat and generous donations from well-wishers all over the world.

We were able to launch SKMCH & RC because we had your support. I sincerely hope that I can look forward to your continued support to help keep the Hospital running and providing hope to those victims of cancer who have no other hope for treatment.

Yours faithfully,

Imran Khan
