[nidokidos] 6 Famous Da Vinci Inventions that Were Ahead of their Time

Da Vinci's Inventions that Were Ahead of their Time

When I hear the name Leonardo Da Vinci, my first associations are his incredible works of art, such as "The Mona Lisa" or "The Last Supper". Da Vinci, however, was a man of many talents and not just a mere painter – he was also a prolific inventor who came up with concepts that were so advanced, they could only have been realized in our time.
Da Vinci used to write down his ideas and sketch designs in his notebook; most of them were preserved after his death in 1519. There isn't any evidence that most of Da Vinci's inventions were constructed during his lifetime, but these 6 designs most definitely were centuries ahead of their time.

1. The Flying Machine

Da Vinci had hundreds of sketches in his notebook that revolved around flight. The design he put most of his time into, was based off of the body structure of birds and bats.
The design included a set of very large wings, attached to a wooden frame where the pilot is meant to lie down on his stomach and control the device with some levers. Sadly, Da Vinci never constructed the flying machine, and experts claim that even if he did – it wouldn't be able to get off the ground or sustain flight without an engine.
It took 400 years until people managed to build a machine that could actually fly.

2. Da Vinci's Tank

Most people consider Da Vinci to be a delicate soul, mainly concerned with creating art. Da Vinci was also heavily involved in military technologies, and one of his greatest patrons, Ludovico Sforza, the duke of Milan was the man entrusted with defending Italy from the invading French army.
To receive Sforza's financial patronage, Da Vinci designed a variety of military contraptions, an armored tank being one of them. The invention included a human-powered carriage, covered in sheets of metal with slits that would allow Italian soldiers to fire their rifles safely.
his flying machine, Da Vinci's tank also never saw the light of day. 400 years later, tanks became commonplace in all of the world's armies.

3. Diving Suit

Even though he wasn't the first person to come up with the idea of a diving suit, his design was the most ingenious and advanced for its time. According to his sketches, the suit was to be made almost entirely of leather and included a full body combination of a jacket, pants and a helmet with tiny glass windows. Air was to be kept in the front bulge of the jacket with tubes attached to the mask to allow the diver to breath.
The suit even had a small compartment for urine collection, because Da Vinci didn't know how long the diver would have to remain underwater. Special pockets for various tools were also designed into the suit, including a knife, and even a horn the diver could blow to signal that he needed to surface.
It was not until Jacque Cousteau invented the "water lung" in the middle of the 20th-cetury that diving suits became common.

4. The Machine Gun

Another one of Da Vinci's ingenious military designs was the machine gun, which has some resemblance to modern-day weapons. The design was for a typical cannon, but with 12 barrels. The device could shoot one cannonball, then quickly be moved to the next loaded barrel and shoot again, as the used barrel was being loaded.
This design was also never constructed during Da Vinci's lifetime, and the first modern machine gun appeared on the battlefield in 1862, during the American Civil War.

5. The City of the Future

During the 15th-century, Europe was still recovering from the black plague, which annihilated more than a third of Europe's population. Da Vinci noticed that cities were more vulnerable to the plague in comparison with rural areas and hypothesized that the cause was how cities were constructed, making them more vulnerable.
The solution was a whole new futuristic city, fully designed from top to bottom to provide the best sanitary conditions to the inhabitants. Da Vinci's City of the Future was divided into several "layers". Anything that was considered to be unhygienic would be located in the bottom layer, to be evacuated via canals. Each part of the city would enjoy running water thanks to an intricate hydraulic system that also served as the basis of modern plumbing.
The result was a marvel of city planning, but its construction was beyond Da Vinci's means, and he couldn't find a patron that would support his endeavors.

6. The Robotic Knight

Even today, autonomous, human- robots seem a piece of science fiction, but under Sforza's patronage, Da Vinci invented a "Mechanical Knight", which was supposedly capable of moving its arms, neck and even opening and closing its "mouth". This strange mechanical doll was controlled via external cables that were attached to sets of pulleys inside the robot's body.
The design was discovered nearly 450 years later and in 2002, a functioning replica of the "Robotic Knight" was built by Mark Rosheim - A robotics researcher from NASA.

Great Documentary, loaded with facts and brings a good balance to Dan Browns Fiction as well as the controversial "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" work that seems to have been mislabeled in the non-fiction category. [nidokidos] 104-Year-Old Crocheter may be the World's Oldest Street Artist...

This 104 Year-Old Grandma, Adorned her Town with Crochet

Grace Brett, a 104-year-old great grandmother might just be the oldest street artist in the world. The grandmother of six is a member of a knitting club known as the 'Souter Stormers' - a group that has recently taken over the towns of Selkirk, Ettrickbridge and Yarrow in Scotland, with their impressive knitting skills. Members of Stormers have spent a year secretly planning a project to conduct this street art installation. And this month, the mischievous knitters took to the streets, sewing up fences, benches and lamp poles all across the town in elaborate knitted art. The images below showcase her impressive knitting skills.

The Souter Stormers are a secret group of knitters. 104-year-old Grace Brett though, is not afraid to show her face. As the oldest member of the group, she makes her own rules.

The group comprises of 40 knitters and crocheters, all of whom were prepared to attend the Yes Arts Festival, but were declined funding. No one saw this street art coming.

"I thought that it was a really good idea to decorate the town and enjoyed having my crochet included," Grace Brett said.

"I d seeing my work showing with everyone elses and thought the town looked lovely."

Her daughter Daphne says that "she always knitted and crocheted all through her life."

"She has always done all the knitting for the babies and made shawls."

Residents have been enjoying their new yarn exhibitions too!

Alice Barker was a chorus line dancer during the Harlem Renaissance of the the 1930s and 40s. She danced at clubs such as The Apollo, Cotton Club, The Zanzibar Club, and on Broadway—with legends including Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Although she danced in numerous movies, commercials and TV shows, she had never seen any of them, and all of her photographs and memorabilia had been lost over the years.

[nidokidos] One of These Facts May Save Your Life One Day!

10 Facts that May Save Your Life

Most people can go through their life without being put in life-threatening situations, but sometimes, remembering what to do in such a case can make the difference between tragedy and a scary memory. Memorize these 10 simple facts and you just might be thankful you did one day, although I hope you never do.

1. The limits of the human body often follow the "Rules of Three":
3 minutes without air
3 hours without shelter from the elements
3 days without drinking
3 weeks without eating

2. If you find yourself caught in a riptide and being pulled out to sea, remain calm and swim parallel to the shore.
Trying to fight the riptide is more ly to lead to exhaustion – the main cause of drowning.

3. If you're in a burning building – keep your head down.
Fire victims often die from inhaling smoke rather than the fire itself. Poisonous smoke is hot and will rise while fresh air will remain close to the ground (Cover your face with a wet towel for extra protection).

4. In a situation where you are crying for help, be specific.
Calling specific people ("You with the blue shirt!") will increase the liness of them helping you. Being called out puts them in an accountable position, reducing the liness of the "bystander effect" (the more people around, the more people feel it's not their responsibility to be the one to help.)

5. Most cell phones can dial the local emergency number when they're locked, even without a SIM card.

6. Learn how to give yourself the Heimlich maneuver.

7. Do you spend more than two straight hours sitting down? Get up, stretch and walk around for 5 minutes.
Whether you have an office job or you're traveling, sitting for prolonged periods can lead to blood clots in your calves. These clots can travel through your bloodstream and end up blocking blood flow to vital organs.

8. If you see a photo where you are the only person in a group who has 'red eyes', visit a doctor.
'Red eye' in just one person in a group may indicate a case of retinoblastoma, which is a type of eye cancer.

9. If you're a man and (for some reason) you use a pregnancy test that comes out positive, visit a doctor.
A positive test in a man may be an indicator of testicular cancer.

10. Even if the traffic light is green, it's not necessarily safe to go.

Try to give yourself 2-3 seconds before you go through that green light, especially if it's a busy intersection. A large percent of deadly vehicle accidents occur because some driver wanted to beat the red light. Waiting for those precious seconds makes sure you don't take that risk.
