FROM MACRO TO MICRO

We often look up to the stars and think of the immensity and vastness of space, but it can make us forget that there is a whole other universe on the micro level. If we look down, closer and closer, we might be able to catch a glimpse of the surface, but if we want to really look at the smallest things in the universe – we need special equipment (or an easy and fun presentation).
Let's dive down into the smallest building blocks of this universe of ours…

This is our home - Planet Earth

The Earth is a giant ball of water and dirt, laying on top a core of molten iron. Earth's circumference is 40,000 kilometers (24,860 mi), with a surface area of 510,072,000 kilometers (316,944,046 mi).

The largest natural structure on earth - Great Barrier Reef

Located off the eastern coast of Australia, the size of the Great Barrier Reef is 344,400 sqkm (133,000 sqmi). It is the world's largest coral reef, and is visible from space!

The largest natural formation - Grand Canyon

Formed by the Colorado River for millions of years, the Grand Canyon is 446 km (277 mi) long.

The largest man-made structure – The Great Wall of China

The Chinese started building defensive walls to ward off Mongolian incursions as early as the 8th-century B.C.E. During the Qin dynasty reign, Emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered the building of a wall, connecting all the previously-built fortifications. This was the earliest incarnation of the Great Wall. The wall was extended and fortified to the size we know today by the Mind dynasty in the 14th-century C.E. It is 8,850 km (5,500 mi) long and is not visible from space.

The highest point on Earth – Mt. Everest

Located in Nepal, at 8,848 meters (29,029 ft.) above sea level, Mt. Everest is the highest point on Earth.

The tallest man-made building – Burj Khalifa

Standing at 829.8 m (2,722 ft.), the world's tallest building is located in Dubai.

Largest tree – Giant Redwood

Endemic to North America, the tallest tree (called "Hyperion") is a 115.55 meters (379.1 ft.) Giant Sequoia. These trees are also some of the oldest living creatures in the world, with the oldest one estimated at over 3,500 years old.

Largest living animal – Blue Whale

The Blue Whale is the largest living animal, with a length of 30 meters (98 ft.). These giants of the deep eat krill (tiny kind of shrimp-like crustaceans).

Largest land animal – African Elephant

The bull African Bush Elephant can reach a size of 5 meters (16 ft.) and weigh as much as 6,048 kg (13,330 lb).

Humans

Us, the dominant species on Earth. Humans have an average size of 1.7 meters (5.5 ft.)

Smallest mammal - Etruscan shrew

These tiny rodents are the smallest mammals, reaching a size of 4 cm (1.6 in).

Smallest Ant – Pharaoh Ant

Their size is a mere 2 millimeters (0.07 in)

Smallest animal - Stygotantulus stocki

This tiny crustacean is smaller than 0.1 millimeters (0.004 in). You can fit more than 20 of these on the world's smallest ant…

A single human hair

Seen here at x200 magnification, the width of human hair is just 100 micrometers (0.003 in) and are some of the smallest things still visible to the naked eye.

Human skin cell

At 35 micrometers (0.001 in), these tiny cells cover every inch of our body, protecting us from disease and external damage.

Red blood cell

These beauties keep us alive by transporting oxygen to all of our organs and removing CO2. The size of a human blood cell is 7 micrometers.

Largest Virus - Megavirus

This nasty piece of work is just 440 nanometers in size. 15 of these bad boys can comfortably ride a red blood cell…

Smallest Virus -Porcine circovirus

This tiny terror's size is barely 17 nanometers.

Carbon nanotubes

Measuring 1 nanometer in width, these tiny tubes are considered to be the next "miracle material", thanks to their durability, conductivity and strength.

Water molecule

H2O (Hydrogen Dioxide) – 1 Hydrogen atom bonds with 2 Oxygen atoms, and that is how water is made. Each molecule is 280 picometers, so 3 of those can fit on one carbon nanotube with some room to spare.

Helium atom

This noble gas fills your birthday balloons, making them lighter than air. It can also raise the pitch of your voice if you inhale it. 1 helium atom is 25 picometers in size.

Neutrons Protons

The center of an atom, called the "Nucleus", is comprised of protons and neutrons. Each is 1 femtometer in size. (There are 1000 femtometers in a picometer)

Quarks

There are 6 kinds of Quarks – Up, Down Strange, Charm, Top, and Bottom. They are the building blocks of protons and electrons. They range between the size of 1 attometer (0.001 femtometer) and 100 yoctometers (0.0001 attometer). In the image above, you see a proton, comprised of two "Up" and one "Down" quarks.

Neutrinos
These subatomic particles are 1 yoctometer long - that's 0.00000000000000000004 inches). Every second, 65 billion neutrinos pass through every cubic centimeter of earth that is in direct sunlight. Neutrinos cannot be detected directly, and are only found by using high-energy underground detectors.

Quantum foam

Also known as the "Fabric of Space and Time". This hypothesized "foam", the building block of the universe, is said to be as small as 0.00000000001 yoctometers.

11 Astounding Scientific Discoveries Made in 2015

I've always followed what's going on in the world of science, but I didn't realize that 2015 was such an incredible year! From regaining perfect vision in eight minutes, to the discovery of hundreds of new wildlife species, this year really had it all. Here's a run-down of the greatest scientific discoveries made this year:

Humanity Discovers a New Ancestor

Scientists found another piece of the puzzle in human evolution when they discovered a human ancestor, which they named homo naledi, in Gauteng, South Africa last September. The discovery marked the largest collection of fossils of a single species ever found on the African continent.

Scientists Make Progress with Editing Human Genes
This year marked numerous breakthroughs in the use of gene-editing technology. Chinese scientists edited the DNA of human embryos that were not viable for a live birth. This represented a major step forward towards medical practitioners having the ability to eradicate disease genes from people.

A Reborn Woolly Mammoth Becomes a Closer Possibility

Researchers at Harvard University managed to insert genes from an extinct woolly mammoth into the living cells of an Asian elephant. This means that scientists could have the ability to bring a species with many of its characteristics to life in years to come.

Discoveries of Many New Species
The World Wildlife Foundation announced the discovery of 211 species in the Eastern Himalayas in a four-year report it published in 2015. The report concluded that 133 plants, 39 invertebrates, 26 fish, 10 amphibians, one reptile, one bird, and one mammal had been discovered.

More Evidence of Free-Flowing Water on Mars

NASA scientists have declared that they have found flowing salty streaks of water, which vary with the seasons, on the surface of Mars. They also found perchlorates, which are waterlogged molecules. Both of these discoveries make the presence of living organisms on Mars a much more likely possibility than previously.

Blood Tests that Detect Cancer

Swedish researchers managed to develop a blood test that can detect the early stages of cancer. It has an accuracy rate of 96%. Furthermore, the test can also correctly classify the type of cancer present in blood with an accuracy of 71%.

A New Antibiotic
A new antibiotic called teixobatin was discovered this year, marking the first new discovery of an antibiotic in 30 years. The antibiotic is able to treat common bacterial infections, such as tuberculosis and septicaemia. It might become available to the public in the next five years.

A Comprehensive New Map of Human Cells

A team of US researchers completed work on a comprehensive map of the human epigenome. This map, which maps out over 100 different types of human cells, will help researchers gain a better understanding of the complex relationship between DNA and diseases.

The Brightest Galaxy Ever Discovered
CR7 is the brightest galaxy discovered by science to date, emitting light equivalent to that of 300 trillion suns. The galaxy, which is 13 billion light years away from earth, was discovered by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer.

Bionic Lenses for Perfect Vision

Patients can now have eyesight better than 20/20 vision thanks to Ocumentic Technology Corp., which has spent $3 million over the course of eight years to develop bionic lenses. The surgery to have the lenses implanted takes just eight minutes.

Ability to Transform Malignant Cells into Immune Cells
Malignant leukemia cells may now be transformed into harmless immune cells, called macrophages, thanks to research conducted by scientists at Stanford University. This discovery could mean that human cancer cells could be turned into immune cells that destroy cancer and other pathogens in the near future.

[nidokidos] How can someone completely eradicate pornography/erotica from internet?

How can someone completely eradicate pornography/erotica from internet?

The internet is a useful and powerful resource and has nearly unlimited amounts of information. It is through broadcasting signals in the atmosphere that the internet is active. So we could change these signals of frequency in ways that could make it impossible for people to access certain sites.
Taking it off the INTERNET is not possible with today's technology, although it may be in the future. However, with any internet service provider, there can be set web filters that block ALL websites of porn, and all future ones. Word combinations, for instance, can automatically determine if a website is blocked.

Here are eight key tools and tactics to eliminate – or significantly reduce – the risks of you or your child coming across pornographic material.

Eight tools to help block internet pornography

1: Set your search engine to "safe search" mode: For Google users go to
http://www.google.com/familysafety/; Bing users go to http://www.bing.com/preferences.aspx; and, if you use another search engine, go to the safety settings and find this feature. If you child uses services like YouTube, be sure you have set the "safe" mode on those platforms as well.

2: Use the family safety tools provided by your computer's/other device's operating system: Both Windows and Mac operating systems provide family safety settings.

3: Use family safety tool services: Sometimes called parental controls, these tools allow you to set specific filters to block types of content you find inappropriate. This isn't just something to apply to youth; plenty of adults prefer to filter out pornographic and other types of content – like hate and violence. The appropriateness of some types of content will change as children mature; other types of content may always be unacceptable. To find the tools that best fit your family's needs, search for parental-control or family-safety-tool reviews.

Keep in mind that these tools need to be installed on every device your child uses to go online: game consoles, cell phones, tablets, personal laptops and computers. Some services have coverage for all types of devices, others are limited to just computers or phones. You may find that using a single solution on all devices makes your monitoring much easier.

4: Periodically look at your children's browser history. There are a number of phrases youth use to get around pornography filters – like "breast feeding" and "childbirth" – and some fast-changing slang terms that filters may not have caught up with like "walking the dog," which is a slang term for sex. If you see odd search terms, give the sites a quick look.

5: Have your children restrict access to their social networking sites to only known friends, and keep their sites private. A great deal of pornography is shared among private albums on social networking sites.

6: Scan the photos on your child's cell phone once in a while. While the youngest kids aren't sexting, by the time they've hit their tweens they have begun participating in this type of behavior. Let your children know that every so often you will sit down with them and go through the pictures they have stored on their phone.

7: Review the applications your child has downloaded to their phone or tablet. Mobile content filters may not catch all the potentially inappropriate apps.

8: You are your strongest tool. No technical blocking solution alone is enough to protect a determined child or teen from finding pornography online. Have the "talk" on an ongoing basis with your children and spouse about the content your family finds appropriate and inappropriate; this exchange should never be a one-time conversation.

Blocking all porn sites in all web browsers in 2 minutes
