10 Questions to Ask Your Wife Every Year

The best remedy for marriage conflict is marriage communication. Disagreements, fights, impasses, separations and divorce can be traced back to poor communication more than any other factor. Likewise, listening amounts to some of the best relationship medicine around.

Listening works best when we ask good questions. Good questions indicate bonafide concern. The man who asks good questions is already well on the way to communication excellence.

The best questions also serve as conversation starters. Remember, you are interested in her. But, once you start talking, she's going to ask stuff too. The more you know each other on a deep level, the easier it is to fall in love all over again.

Here are 10 good questions you should ask your wife, at least every year:

What do you think is going right in our relationship?

It's been a while since you took the marriage vows. But it's still true that positive affirmation leads to more productive change than negative evaluation. It's helpful to identify our strengths. Once we know them we can play to them. Building each other up is always a win-win.

Where would you like our relationship to be this time next year?

It doesn't matter where we are, there's always room to be better. She might say, "I'd like to see more spontaneous affection." Or, "I want us to be moving forward together in our faith." She could say, "I want our relationship to involve more fun!"

Will you please marry me, all over again?

Say it with flowers. Say it like you mean it. Make sure your wife knows how much you cherish her.

I'd love to hear about your dreams for the future

A wise Hebrew writer once wrote, "Without a vision, the people perish." Listen to your wife, imagine great things together, and then step into the possibilities.

Is there anywhere you'd like to visit this coming year?

Indulge a little whimsy. Listen, laugh together, fantasize about fabulous vacations, and then tuck the information away somewhere, so you can possibly plan a trip. A good husband listens to his wife's dreams. A great husband weaves them into their plans for the future.

Do you think we're doing OK financially?

This needs to be an ongoing conversation. However, like any small business (and a family is like a business in many ways), the directors need to have a comprehensive annual meeting to evaluate the finances and the plan for the coming year.

How are you doing health-wise?

Encouraging one another involves accountability. Partners should never remain ignorant when it comes to health concerns. And not just physical health. It's also important to take inventory of each other's emotional well-being.

If you could change one thing about our priorities as a family, what would it be?

Notice this isn't an invitation to criticize, but more an opportunity to grow together.

Possible answers might include:

- I'd like to see less TV time and more family time with one another at home.

- We're not eating together enough. I'd like to see dinnertime valued a little more.

-We say can't afford a family vacation, but then we eat out 2-3 times a week. Maybe we should shift that one around!

Is there anything I devote regular time to that you see as a possible threat to our family or our relationship?

Patterns take time to emerge. When we look back – or from another person's point of view – sometimes we can see more clearly. Ask your wife if there are any adjustments you can make (Consistently late for dinner? Too much golf? Too many evenings with "the boys"?) that would help her to feel more secure.

Are you happy?

It's a good question even if she says she's happy already. "What can I do to make you more happy?" is a great discussion. Again, this is where good, active listening is very important. And your wife's greatest happiness will always be found in God, so encourage her to grow in her faith.

[nidokidos] Self-absorption

Self-absorption

Anand typically walks in the morning by the Bay: The new day is fully alive; it is a delight to smell freshness all around: all sorts of birds arrive for "early breakfast," and the Sun shines its warmth equally among every living being.
Anand realized in that walk, that the clearer his mind is from thoughts about himself, greater enjoyment will be experienced.
Anand also experienced, that whatever the heart desires, the mind will make it happen…. Even if it is not "real." It is all about those thoughts shaping the reality to fulfill unconscious wishes.
Playing with those thoughts about the reality of "me," is called self-absorption.
When we reach that stage of consciousness, we see life only in relationship with our perceived "Me."
If "I" have a problem, nothing going on outside will matter unless that which "I" see outside "myself," helps "me."
For example, if someone "falls in love," and there is no correspondence as she wishes to happen; the ego will be hurt. That pain will be expressed through continuous thoughts about the same thing, for something has to be done to change that. Even though, life changes as we move in time, the thoughts from the past and future will be there hunting that person down, until "something" happens which is interpreted as "beneficial." Then a "new story" is built by the mind.
Someone in that state of being cannot appreciate anything. That self –absorption does not allow for life to continue on, but it stops in the wall of the "Me." For most, that is a very strong wall.
"I am hurt, thus the world does not matter."
That is extreme self-absorption.
Anand was smiling at the runners by the Bay, saying "hello" to them. But, a "hello" back to him seldom happened.
Most of them weren't "real runners," for running, as running in itself wasn't enjoyed. It was about losing weight, getting a "workout," etc. Anything but enjoying that running, enjoying that activity of moving one foot in front of the other through a graceful jump… all by itself.
You could see it in their faces. All hooked up to their devices, phones, radios, etc. To be in another reality until the "workout is over." :-)
In self absorption, the beauty of Nature is of no consequence when all it matters is to "lose weight" and " to look good" as if there was a "judge" waiting to judge the "results."
In self-absorption, enjoyment is an unknown long lasting experience. It is all about results, all about "getting there and make it happen." Never mind the "process."
When someone is self absorbed, to "do " and to "have" are important as long as they enhance the sense of "me."
My family is important as an extension of me.
My car is important as a perceived status of me.
My body is important as an image of me.
Exercise is important as a tool to reshape me.
God is important, as long as He helps me.
Meditation is important to feel good about me.
My thoughts about "me" will not allow "me" to appreciate "Me."
In that state of consciousness, it is very difficult to experience oneness, for "Me" only sees separation.
When the capacity for enjoyment of life is gone; when feeling gratitude for being awake everyday is gone; when all there is in life is to "take care of me," through the "same old thing," when the only joy remaining is to "purchase" new things or to taste "new things," at that point there is a need to change, for that self absorption will literally kill you.
That "me" is truly your worst nightmare. Wake up to save yourself…

[nidokidos] On tolerance and patience

On tolerance and patience

Anand was complaining to Mathias, the wise tree; about the visit of a friend; Raysha.

Anand likes to relax, unwind and take it easy. Raysha on the other hand, likes to be with people all the time, by using her effective "healing skills" she was helping many and having many people around her; but Anand was not used to such movement.

Anand told Mathias in a lamenting tone of voice with suffering gestures:
" I couldn't sleep well last night...What can I do, friend. I have to tolerate and have patience during her visit."
Mathias responded to Anand's sacrifice and toleration: " Friend, Mathias is amused at your performance…" :-)

Anand thought that he was going to get some sympathy from his friend; after all he was practicing the "virtue" of tolerance and being extremely patient with Raysha.

In the consciousness of "you" and "I," that is when the child is separated from the Father as well as the other "brothers and sisters," the word tolerance is "good." It is called a virtue.

A child can "tolerate" another brother or a sister when things are not going according to his wishes.

A child can have patience with "another" when the response he is getting does not fit his expectations.

A child, who can only see separation, will be tolerating things as a "good thing to do." It is a "virtue" to tolerate others.

However, in another consciousness, to tolerate means not to accept things as they are. In other words, "I" pretend to go along with whatever is happening to avoid confrontation or a childish tantrum in front of others.

Any sort of "toleration" has a breaking point. Things cannot longer be tolerated and then, the "real" self comes out from the repression of having to tolerate.

Is truly to tolerate a virtue?
When the "savage" child pretends to be "well behaved " for the sake of all, to tolerate may be called a virtue by some. Nevertheless, it is not a virtue, when that performance is born out of separation and it does not reflect the true feelings of the self.

In oneness, there is only continuity in life changes. If we could observe ourselves and see how we "pretend" to be "nice" with "others" through being "tolerant;" we can see that our vibes and feelings change. Using a nice word such as "toleration" cannot mask those vibes.

In oneness there is emptiness of that "I" which puts a wall on things that are happening. That wall is the product of our own beliefs and comfort zones; that is the construction of a personality. When that personality clashes with "others" or with a circumstance, then we could either "react" or be "tolerant."

To react is to hit something from the inside to the outside. To tolerate is to hit the self, the inside from the inside...

There is no virtue in self-damage, but in the childish world where there is only "you or me," as separated beings, a virtue is meant to help others over the self. You need to select between you or someone else.

In Oneness, there is no "other." Therefore, no need to tolerate or be patient. This is not a concept to be analyzed, it is an experience of life through a different vision.

Virtues cannot appear by being cultivated. We are already complete with all of them; but the illusory vision of separation may need to change, the "illusion" needs to be removed for those virtues to automatically appear.

The support of the "I" through spiritual teachings separating the "you and me," is a beginner step into the recognition of that "I" but is not meant to be the whole "truth" but just a different view according to consciousness.

As we change our view, our consciousness from that separation into oneness, there is a different perception where patience and toleration are no longer needed.
