Strength of Character

There is a popular saying, "If wealth is lost nothing is lost, if health is lost something is lost, but if character is lost everything is lost". But today what we see in society is quite the contrary. Money is playing a dominant role in the present society. People are prepared to do anything for money, they can go to any extent, and they are least bothered about the means. They are busy amassing wealth even at the cost of others. Their hearts are dead. They are living corpses. They have no compassion, love or sympathy for other human beings. Adulteration, cheating, bribery, theft, scams, scandals, dowry harassment, robbery, exploitation are rampant everywhere. Surprisingly they are being perpetuated by the so-called educated people. In the modern educational system, only intellect is being developed but there is no scope for the development of the heart. It is making people more and more selfish and greedy. Swami Vivekanand observed this and said, "Bring light to the ignorant, and more light to the educated, for the vanities of the education of our time are tremendous."

In the midst of chaos and confusion, here and there we come across a few great characters who have left their marks through their wonderful contribution. Among such we have a most celebrated personality, Sir Mokshagundam Visweswarayya, a great engineer produced by India in the last century. He is a bright example to our youth. He lived for 102 years and was full of enthusiasm, zeal and energy, almost till the end of his life. His dedication, sincerity, hard work, skills, integration, honesty, spirit of service, patriotism, and above all his undaunted courage and disciplined life made him a unique personality. He was awarded the highest civilian award, `Bharat Ratna', for his great contribution to our motherland. His biographer writes, "His was an unblemished pure life. No blemish could be traced in his long career. When on duty he would use Government vehicle, otherwise his own car. He never used Government paper and stationary for personal and non official correspondence. When in doubt, whether it was Government paper or not, he would examine in bright light to detect the embossed mark, `government stationary'. When he was asked about the eradication of poverty, he said, `poverty is not natural. It is unnatural. It is curable like any other disease. Ignorance, dependence, inefficiency, laziness, want of the spirit of enterprise are the real causes of poverty.

Gandhiji's slogan was `Industrialise and perish', where as Sir Visweswarayya's slogan was `Industrialise or perish. Both were right: one was emphasizing human values, other material prosperity. Swami Vivekananda came to harmonise these two apparent contradictory views. He encouraged Sir Jamshedji Tata to establish heavy industries in India, and asked Mysore Maharaja to help Jamshedji by way of providing land and infrastructure for the same. Swamiji wanted India to be great in every field, but not at the cost of long cherished values and culture. He was sure unless we combine both these there cannot be real progress. The education which provides us both these aspects was real education, according to him. He said, "What we want are Western science coupled with Vedanta as the guiding motto and also shraddha and faith in one's own self."

Unfortunately, after independence, we are mostly concentrating on only one aspect, which is western science; the other one is completely neglected. In the name of secularism, we have carefully avoided long-cherished values which our ancestors lived for and practised. Due to lack of character energy, we have converted human beings into machines. Every year we are manufacturing thousands of Doctors, engineers, Lawyers, Managers, Administrators but not real human beings. Human values such as love, compassion, peace, happiness, truthfulness, honesty, sincerity, contentment, non-violence, patriotism, fearlessness, confidence, courage, self-restraint are replaced by hatred, cruelty, deceit, greed, dishonesty, lust, anger, fear, cowardice, selfishness, violence etc, which has created a vacuum in the hearts of people. We have never seen in the history such a degradation of human values.

Forgiveness means forgiving our self

When we hold resentment against someone, it becomes a very strong negative emotional link, we are bound to them. The one who lets it go, will set them self free.

Forgiveness means forgiving our self by letting go of the resentment we have held on to. Even if the other person forgives us, we will remain in pain till we let go of the past negative experience.

Forgiveness does not only mean we are behaving and talking as before. It means we have healed our hurt, have understood the other person's perspective and do not hold them responsible for our pain.

Do not be angry with people for not forgiving us. Understand they are still in pain and do not have the courage to interact again because they fear that they may get hurt again. Send vibrations of love and compassion which will help to heal them.

Earlier when we experienced pain, we blamed others for it and wanted them to change so that we would be happy. Now we are aware - we are in pain, we are the creator of the pain and we have to heal our self, so it is complete self responsibility.

When we blame others for our state of being, we are giving our power to them. We also become dependent on them to heal us.

People have the power to affect everything that is outside of us – our work, money, property and even our body. But people do not have the power to affect our mind; that is completely in our control.

Healing is not an overnight process. It is a daily cleansing of pain. Be aware of your reactions in situations. Appreciate yourself for all the right responses. When a negative sanskar comes into action, do not justify it, prepare yourself to do it differently the next time.

To change any habit we take care of 4 aspects. Gyan – Knowledge, Yog – Meditation, Dharna -Inculcation and Seva - Sharing.

Study of spiritual knowledge in the morning and attention on application in situations is Dharna.� We shift from reactive behaviors to consciously responding from our original qualities of peace, love and respect.

Share the knowledge with others through words, actions and vibrations. �When we bring our qualities into action or radiate pure thoughts to others, it is Seva.

Meditation means connecting to the Supreme Power, God and taking His powers and love to heal our blockages, and emerge our original sanskars.

Forgiveness is about letting go of the past. That frees you to experience the now that is creating your future.

Australia 's iconic Uluru(Ayres Rock) is barely recognisable in a series of photographs taken during torrential rain earlier this month.

For local photographer Peter Carroll, it was a 20 year wait to capture rain on the rock

Magic at Uluru (Image reproduced with permission: Peter Carroll) Local landscape photographer Peter Carroll was in the right place at the right time when the rain came bucketing down earlier in the month. Peter was at Yulara - the township near Uluru when he woke at 3am to the sound of torrential rain. "It has been a 20 year dream to see Uluru with water pouring down her flanks," writes Peter in his blog, 'so there I lay tossing and turning praying the rain would continue til the crack of dawn.' Most longtime residents of Central Australia know that the sight of rain on the rock is a rare phenomenon. For a landscape photographer, it's gold. Before the sun had risen, Peter was out there with his camera. "I had to calm myself a little bit. It was pretty momentous," says Peter. "I went round to the general car park area where the climb is...and that's where these white stripes started to reveal themselves, it was pretty spectacular." The result of Peter's work is a spectacular collection of images that show Uluru in a whole new light. Barely recognisable with silver lines snaking down the surface and eerie fog hovering - the images will no doubt find a large audience.. Several have already appeared on the front page of The Australian. Most of the shots were taken near the Mututjulu waterhole, says Peter, and what he heard that morning was just as powerful as what he saw through the lens. "Once I got out of the car and started walking in, all the noises started to take over," he says. "When you hear that water rushing down the side, and plummeting over cliffs, it really is a special sound. And because we've had so much rain lately there's just hundreds of thousands of frogs around the place, it was pretty magical." "I've been down [to Uluru] a lot and whenever I'm down there it delivers some special, special moment..I don't know what the inner workings of it are on the human psyche but it's fairly powerful stuff."
